Daughter – Youth
I can’t help but relax as the guitar opens the song. The lyrics are powerful, and gentle at the same time. Elena Tonra, the singer, is obviously bitter towards romance. There is exploration of drug abuse, of bitter relationships and hopeless dreams.
This verse is my favorite:
Because if you’re still breathing,
you’re the lucky ones,
most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs.
Setting fire to our insides for fun
and collecting names of the lovers
that went wrong.
and you [he] caused it.
She describes drinking habits as setting fire to our insides for fun. My interpretation is that we enjoy destructive behavior because it makes us in control of our pain, even though we want to blame others. When she says that most of us are still heaving through corrupted lungs, I think of the literal corruption caused by chemicals in tobacco smoke. I could also reminisce of metaphysical corruption of the lungs through misusing the power of words.
This art is tear jerking in my opinion. Question your pain, your pleasure and the blessings left unnoticed. Even more subtly, is the idea that we cause our own pain. Even though she said “you caused it” referring to a ‘him,’ the rest of the song leads us to believe that heart break and emotional break down are caused by others, but we allow it and destroy ourselves to cope with the pain.
